The southern African nation of Zimbabwe has had a pretty rough go of things recently, but they can expect no sympathy form British Airways, who after announcing high losses on routes to the struggling nation, also made public they would halt all of their Harare bound flights.

October 28th will be the last voyage for the thrice-weekly roundtrip services between the capital cities of the two countries. One big financial burden for BA is that due to the economic crisis in Zimbabwe, the airline has been forced to procure its fuel from neighbouring nations and transporting it to the airport in Harare.

Aside form fuel, Zimbabwe is experiencing food shortages, water shortages- shortages of just about everything since the violent crackdowns of Robert Mugabe’s government. Inflation has gone wild here over the last while, and thanks to Mugabe, the inflation rate for the local currency will reach 100,000 percent by 2008.

The tragic state of Zimbabwe has caused not only BA to leave, in fact, Dutch, Portuguese, French and Australian airlines have already packed up, leaving only the national carrier and three other African airlines to service Harare’s international airport.

I was reading about the inflation in Zimbabwe, and you can earn a monthly salary that buys a loaf of bread and that’s all.

In this day and age……you’d think that….

    No..I won’t even go there.

Bet they still do loads of flights to Lagos and Freetown…more now, in fact now that they are oycotting Harare.

Can’t really blame BA at all.

When I left Harare in 1988 on BA, it was delayed by 6 hours on the tarmac.

    Good riddance.
