London’s Gatwick airport will launch a first for any UK airport by constructing the first inner-terminal airport hotel. Well, more like cabins really…

46 cabins to be precise; Yotel founder Simon Woodroffe aims to provide a first class experience at an affordable price to those who have too much time to spend waiting in a moulded plastic chair inside Gatwick airport.

Intended to ease the inconvenience of delays, long transfers and early morning flights, each of these innovative cabins is equipped with free Wifi, ensuite bathrooms and an entertainment system.

The cabins can be booked in advance online if you know you’re flight leaves early, and can also be rented in a mater of minutes should you find yourself waiting hours for a delayed flight and in need of a shower and a nap.

Te design was based on first class airplane and yacht cabins, aiming to provide space for work, relaxation or entertainment. CEO Gerard Greene sees the project as “Designed to offer a solution to boring and expensive hotels around the globe.”

Gatwick is the first airport to get the Yotel cabins, but the company plans to bring their products to more airports around the UK in  the near future.

I was delayed at Gatwick for 24 hours in 2004. The airline put us up at the Gatwick Hilton which was a short walk but still connected to the airport. I must say the standards were the worst I had encountered at any “Hilton” hotel.

Inferior food, a croissant and watery instant coffe masquerading as a continental breakfast, as well as a chaotic bar area near the check in desk.

I would jump at the chance to try one of the “yotel” rooms. But are they affordable to all?

Bet they are only available to those NOT sitting in economy class.

Or they get priced up as such. If someone has saved money by using a certain air line, then why would they then spend what they saved on a cabin room at the airport?

Like I said, I think air lines will offer them free to business and first travellers.

So when is this bizarre idea going to bear fruit?

why not build a decent medium budget hotel nearby?

Most backpackers would not make use of a yotel or whatever it is. They would still sit around on the floor of the airport.

Would a family fit in to one of these rooms?

Maybe a lone traveller or couple would consider one of these, but other than that, who ?

I feel claustrphobic all of a sudden.
