This summer has seen nothing but negative reports about airlines, airport security, flight delays, despondent staff and the overall headaches that travelling by plane has become. But despite the endless bad press, the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend in the United Sates will see a 2.6 increase in travellers compared to last year.

Between August 29th and September 5th, the Air Transport Association estimates that 15.7 million people will depart globally or domestically form airports in the US. The group also forecasted inevitable delays, but placatingly stated they would surely be caused by that unpredictable incubus, the weather.

A big reason for all the delays is that the air traffic control systems used to direct planes in and out of US airports is 50 years old. THE technology is outdated and this is at the root of statistics that report delays are at a 12-year high.

James May, ATA’s president and CEO, said in a release, “While we cannot get in the way of Mother Nature, passengers can demand that Congress fairly fund the sorely needed modernization of our nation’s airspace, which can help to mitigate future delays.”

An “ideal” time for terrorist activities, I really think security will be sky high, and that the authorities are just appearing relaxed about the whole thing.

    Good move.

50 year old equipment? Which is part of the most important safety aspect of the plane when it’s at its most vulnerable (taking of and landing, taking off is when a plane is most vulnerable, being full of fuel and using full power to gain altitude)

oh, and how the heck do you ‘modernise’ air space?
