Wizz Air to cease Coventry Airport operations
Posted on: August 15th, 2008 by Dave SmithWizz Air will complete its pull-out from Coventry Airport when it discontinues its last remaining flight from the regional airport next month.
On 15 September, the budget carrier will discontinue its three times weekly service to Katowice, Poland, severing its final links with the regional hub.
The departure of Wizz Air from Coventry Airport follows the discontinuation of another service linking Coventry with Poland. In May, service to Gdansk was cancelled, after having lasted only two months.
Introducing the Katowice connection this summer was meant to signal a new wave of expansion at the regional air facility.
Expectations that the large Polish population in Coventry would ensure success of the service proved incorrect, however, as passenger numbers have remained low since the introduction of the service.
A Wizz Air spokesperson commented on the cancellation of the Katowice route in an interview with The Coventry Telegraph: “The trends are changing and the demand for city breaks is on the increase, while the trends towards working in the UK are in decline.”
Demand for the Katowice service is also believed to have been impacted by Ryanair’s new service offered from the Birmingham Airport.
