For most people, having their fingerprints taken is tantamount to being identified as a criminal. So with some countries wanting to make fingerprinting mandatory at airports, how are we supposed to feel about it? So far, the only two countries where you will be subject to giving your fingerprints to the computer are Japan and the United States. When you arrive at Narita International Airport in Tokyo for example, there are signs saying that failure to submit to fingerprint identification will result in refused entry to the country.

Now the issue is at Heathrow’s new Terminal 5. The next step being taken at Heathrow being that fingerprints will be required even for domestic flights. The thing is, to be a legal requirement, there has to be a law. But as far as T5 fingerprinting goes, there isn’t. British Airways and BAA say that by choosing to use T5, you are giving consent to have your fingerprints taken, but without any legal basis, refusal shouldn’t result in refused entry to the airport, should it?
