Folks in Northern Ireland could potentially receive a white Christmas this year, with forecasters reporting the possibility of snowfall over the week of Christmas for areas such as Northern Ireland. Weather forecasters have said that should it snow on Christmas day this year in Ireland, it would be the first white Christmas for the region in five years.

Temperatures in the area are anticipated to fall rapidly by the close of this week which could spur snowfall for the coming weeks Christmas festivities. The Met Office has said that snow could be around the corner as Christmas gets closer and closer.

In order for a traditional white Christmas to blanket Northern Ireland with extra Christmas cheer, snowfall would have to reach at least 1mm of snow from midnight to 11 pm on Christmas Day. The recordings will be taken at the Belfast International Airport by their official weather station.

Bets are already being made for the white Christmas spectular with bookmakers decreasing their odds for Belfast. The last time bookmakers did this was back in 2004, the same year Northern Ireland received it’s last white Christmas. Betfred and Boylesports are down to 3/1.

Weather stations across the UK have been reporting prospects of a white Christmas. Last week, several forecasters said that southern and central England may also see snow on Christmas day, although the prospect is less likely. Icy cold winds have been bringing in the opportunity of snowfall to the UK from Siberia which will make temperatures drop down to sub-zero.
