When the rain falls, Britons head for the sun
Posted on: July 26th, 2007 by Andrew MayerAs heavy rains and flood waters hit Britain contributing to an already wet summer, many people are escaping from under cloudy skies and heading to sunnier climes.
Budget airline Ryanair has discovered that the number of tickets for flights from Dublin Airport directly corresponds with rainfall statistics available through Met Eireann, the meteorological service in Ireland.
The airline studied figures from the middle of June to the middle of July and discovered that increases in the amount of rain corresponded with an increase in ticket sales. The low-cost carrier does concede that their recent free-flight offer also contributed to a large increase in ticket sales.
Peter Sherrard, who works for Ryanair, said: “It’s official, Irish passengers are booking summer getaways in record numbers, prompted by fantastic Ryanair bargains and miserable weather. Ryanair records more Dublin bookings on the rainiest days of the month, as glum passengers snap up last minute Ryanair bargains to the sun.”
