Weather causes trouble for flyers
Posted on: December 12th, 2007 by Andrew MayerA storm which passed over south-central Kansas on Tuesday brought with it enough freezing rain and ice to ground planes flying out of Mid-Continent Airport. The build up of ice on power lines caused electricity disruptions for thousands of residents in the state and was the cause of several accidents.
According to Westar Energy, the storm has left 80,000 people without access to power. Some have had their access to electricity to restore and others are still in the dark.
The Kansas Adjutant General’s office has slightly different figures and claims that as many as 115,000 residents of the state have been cut off from power since the storm begun.
Generators are being employed in some areas in the southeast, to power sewage and water treatment systems. The generators are being delivered by members of the 184th Intelligence Wing at McConnell Air Force Base.
At the Wichita Mid-Continent Airport, officials are advising passengers to call ahead and check the status of their flight with their airline before leaving for the airport as many flights are experiencing delays and cancellations.
