Warnings of traffic disruptions as snow heads north
Posted on: February 2nd, 2009 by Dave BessScotland is bracing for more heavy snow later this week as a storm that is located in southern England heads to the north.
The Met office said over the weekend that heavy snows in the south-east of England are expected to move north of the Scottish border by mid-week.
According to weather forecasters the snows in Scotland are not likely to reach the severity of the “extreme weather” expected throughout southern England, but it could be sufficient to disrupt transportation.
Helen Chivers, a weather woman with the Met office, said: “There are sleety snow showers over the east coast of Scotland today and by tomorrow morning there might be one to two centimetres of snow over the Borders, Dumfries and Galloway and all the way up through Glasgow and across in Edinburgh and Inverness.”
She added: “The heaviest snowfalls in Scotland may well come through Wednesday to Thursday, bringing the risk of disruption to traffic.”
Snow levels are expected to reach five centimetres in the mountains, and are considered normal for Scotland at this point in the winter. “I don’t think it will be extreme in Scotland,” Chivers commented. The worst snow is likely to be on the east coast, but could turn to rain due to the warmer temperatures by the sea.
