The tourism office for the England, Scotland and Wales, VisitBritain, is planning to close its walk-in visitor centre in New York. Most visitors use the organization’s website, with 98 per cent of its business conducted this year online – as compared to 40 per cent just eight years ago.

Nearly 250,000 people visit the VisitBritain website each month, where they access information on Britain that includes suggested tour itineraries, attractions, hotels, restaurants and special discount packages.

The website features an online shop where tourist board visitors can purchase attraction passes, events tickets and travel cards. The Oyster Card is the best-selling item on the site, and is used by visitors travelling to London to obtain low-cost transport. The VisitBritain online shop is one of the only places where US travellers can purchase the card.

VisitBritain’s executive vice president and regional director for the Americas commented: “VisitBritain prides itself on delivering high quality marketing and customer service in the U.S. This change will enable us to focus more resources online, where the vast majority of our customers are and expand into new areas such as social media.”

New York and Los Angeles office staff will continue to operate VisitBritain marketing programmes, working with through the organisation’s media relations and travel trade divisions.
