Virgin launches another first: biofuel flight
Posted on: February 25th, 2008 by Paul FenrichThe virtues of biofuel have been extolled and debated, but nonetheless the controversial alternate energy source was put to use in a commercial aircraft for the first time this week by Sir Richard Branson and Virgin Atlantic. The test flight left London and landed in nearby Amsterdam Sunday morning. Virgin Atlantic says much useful information was garnered from the flight, while cynics call the flight nothing more than a publicity stunt using a fuel source that is not favoured by an industry majority.
Virgin’s president Branson said, “This breakthrough will help Virgin Atlantic to fly its planes using clean fuel sooner than expected. The flight can provide crucial knowledge that we can use to dramatically reduce our carbon footprint.”
Airline analyst James Halstead at Dawnay Day Lockhart says, “It’s great that somebody like Richard is willing to put some of his billions into an experiment aimed at reducing the climate change impact of aviation, but there are a lot of unanswered questions about the usefulness of biofuels in the battle against global warming.”

At least an airline is trying amidst all these huge super jumbos being built and no green fuel use in sight on any of them whatsoever.
I agree with James Halstead’s comments.

They are reducing their carbon footprint, but not by much but t’s refreshing to see people making the effort to do so in one way or another.

Oops I only wanted to correct my first post!

I have never seen, or read about British Airways reducing its carbon footprint, it appears that many airlines are trying to just do as much business now before being drastically made to reduce theirs in the next two-three years.
