Virgin Atlantic to freeze staff pay
Posted on: January 28th, 2009 by Andrew BonesAward-winning airline Virgin Atlantic has announced that will be implementing a pay freeze in March in a move intended to help avoid redundancies.
Airline management said that the pay freeze would be applied across its entire workforce, and include ground crew, flight crew, senior management and company directors.
The airline stressed that it remains confident it will achieve a profit during its current financial year, which concludes at the end of February.
Airline chief executive, Steve Ridgway, said: “During a recession, we all have to act responsibly to ensure that jobs are protected and that consumers get the best service. A pay freeze among our staff will help us remain strong during a period of lower demand for air travel.”
He went on to say: “While consumers are benefiting from the lowest ever fares to some of our destinations, it means that our revenues will be lower this year and so we have to reduce our costs and capacity as a result.”
Ridgway noted that the tough economic times call for taking responsible measures to protect employees and the airline for the future.
