Virgin Atlantic brings hurricane relief to Jamaica
Posted on: August 22nd, 2007 by Charlotte FellowsOn Sunday night, Hurricane Dean passed by the southern shores of Jamaica, leaving a host of devastation in its wake. Virgin Atlantic has agreed to help those affected by the hurricane, bringing thousands of blankets and packages of food to those in need.
After the hurricane hit, Virgin Atlantic was the first airline in the UK to resume scheduled services. Flight VS65 landed in Montego Bay where airports had been closed during the storm.
Flight VS65 contained food packs full of items such as fresh water, fresh fruit, biscuits and health bars. The packs were handed out by agencies working on the ground in the area around Montego Bay.
Virgin Atlantic is considering sending more supplies with subsequent flights, depending on the exact extent of the damage in Jamaica. The hurricane tore through the southern part of the country with winds getting up to 145 miles per hour.
After grazing Jamaica, the hurricane headed north to Cozumel and Cancun, who were relatively unaffected. Very little tourist infrastructure was damaged by the hurricane and hotels and restaurants in the area are now back up and running.
