VisitBritain and Virgin Atlantic Airways have joined forces in the launch of a campaign aimed at enticing more Americans to visit the UK.

Arrival numbers from the US have dropped off by 11.5 per cent in the past five years, largely due to the decline in the value of the dollar and more recently due to the financial crisis. The country remains the largest overseas market for the UK, however.

Each year, three million Americans spend £2.2 billion pounds on trips to Britain.

The new £660,000 campaign, called ‘Get More Britain For Your Buck’, will advertise online on sites such as Expedia.com, Frommers.com and Hotels.com, and others.

A new website has been developed for the campaign, getmorebritain.com, and will be promoted via media relations. The site features destination guides, showcases the top 25 things to see and do and allows travellers to book flights directly on Virgin Atlantic Airways.

Visitors from the US can also enter a competition on the website for a trip for two to London that includes flights and special tours the House of Commons, the House of Lords and Westminster Palace.

“The global economic climate means that people are watching their wallets before deciding how they spend their money,” said VisitBritain’s regional director for the Americas, Simon Bradley.

Bradley added: “Fortunately for the first time in 20 years the weak pound means, if they travel right now, Americans will find Britain has never been more affordable.”
