According to a survey just released, only a small percentage of cruisers say they will forgo a cruise in 2009 due to financial considerations.

The survey found that 13 per cent of the 2,000 cruise travellers responding said they would not be taking a cruise in 2009 because of tight finances, while 23 per cent reported that their plans would not be affected at all.

Many respondents did indicate that they are looking at ways to economise on the cost of cruises, however, according to the results of the poll conducted by the cruise news website, CruiseCritic.co.uk.

Most popular of the means for saving money on a cruise, and chosen by 32 per cent of the respondents, was to avoid having to fly to the point of embarkation, and sailing from a closer homeport. Twenty-six per cent said they would book at the last minute, hoping to find a cheap deal. Significantly reducing onboard spending was the choice of 23 per cent of the respondents to the survey.

Editor-in-chief of CruiseCritic, Carolyn Spencer Brown, said: “Cruise travellers are a determined lot and will go without and seek out all kinds of economies before losing their annual fix on the high seas.”

She went on to say: “Of course, the inclusive nature of cruise travel means that it compares very favourably with a land based holiday with a cruise fare typically including accommodation, meals, gratuities, entertainment, transport from port to port, and, in some cases, even air fare.”
