Vandals damage Christmas islands show

A holiday lights display near Inverness city centre, located on River Ness islands, has been damaged by vandalism.

The Highland Council reported that as many as 10,000 people visited the Ness Islands Lights display last weekend.

It had been scheduled to run through the holiday period, but the damaged caused to the show forced its cancellation by the organizers.

The islands were transformed into a winter wonderland scene complete with lights in the shapes of deer, polar bear and a Santa.

Roy Pedersen, the council’s winter festival committee chairman, noted that the displays would have to be removed for this year.

He said: “It is a great shame that we have had to take this action. However, we had no choice as the vandalism was not restricted to an isolated incident. We had to think of people’s safety and to remove the expensive equipment before it was damaged beyond repair.”

Pedersen added: “We have strong memories of all the happy faces we saw at the weekend and I am sure it will be the feeling of many councillors that we do not want to give in to mindless vandals and that we can devise a plan that will allow the Ness Islands Lights to shine again next year.”
