Being gored by an animal in nature is not an unheard of phenomenon, but recently in Southern California a young man was attacked by what most people wouldn’t see as an animal aggressive towards humans, a bison.

Yes, bison are large and not to be trifled with, but this is the first time it has been reported that one of the bison attacked a human being. The unlucky chap was 24-year old Jardrec Anangos as could only say he was “happy to be alive”.

The incident happened when he and two friends had backpacked to Santa Catalina Island to go snorkeling, and one of the bison, which is a descendant of the herd that had been brought to the island in the 1920s to shoot a silent film.

Anangos got within about 20 feet of one of the animals and the bison “didn’t like me standing that close and charged me. There was no real chance of me escaping. They’re way faster than humans,” he said from hospital.

He was gored in the back of the thigh and is recovering from a fractured pelvic bone and other minor injuries.
