Britons heading out on holiday are starting to choose regional airports for their departures, rather than larger hubs, such as Heathrow Airport, according to one package holiday operator.

Jet2holidays.com is reporting that UK holidaymakers have become frustrated with the rising surcharges and long queues that are part of travelling from large airports.

According to the travel operator, low-cost carrier Jet2.com, which is an affiliate of jet2holidays, is seeing growth this year at all of its six regional bases in the UK regional bases. It also indicated that two-thirds of the passengers were holidaymakers taking flights during peak seasons.

A spokeswoman for jet2holidays.com, Mandy Round, commented that the downturn in the airline industry overall seems to not be having an impact on the smaller, more economical operations at gateways such as Leeds Bradford Airport, for example.

She added: “The London airports maybe experiencing a backlash from travellers, but this is simply not the case in the regions.

“Regional airports are not just easier to get to, they have better and cheaper parking and far fewer queues - meaning the time spent checking in and navigating security is much more of a breeze.

“The whole experience is far removed from the chaos we’ve seen at the likes of Heathrow’s Terminal 5.”
