UK to see first beach hut resort
Posted on: August 31st, 2009 by Dave BessThe first beach hut resort in the UK, situated on the North East coast, is set to be open for the Easter holiday in 2010.
The Whitley Bay project will comprise 21 huts, all having direct beach access.
Each of the huts will sleep four to six, with a separate bedroom, bathroom, a sitting area, fitted kitchen and access to a 24-hour concierge service.
Rental rates will range from £300 to £450 per week depending on the season, and the resort will be open for 11 months of the year.
The North Tynseside project, to be known as Dukes Walk Beach Hut Resort, is subject to planning permission.
Developers are planning an art gallery in the vacant space behind a café that is adjacent to the huts.
Newcastle-upon-Tyne-based firm Kensington and Partners designed the resort.
The project’s lead architect, Keith Eland, commented: “One of the key design challenges was to provide accommodation for family holidays while maintaining the traditional English beach hut look.”
He added: “We achieved this by combining two units together with a glass break giving maximum internal space but keeping the traditional rhythm associated with a row of beach huts,” noting: “This gave us space for a large living area, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen with all the facilities you would expect in an apart-hotel.”
