Britons in increasing numbers are booking holidays to the eurozone this summer, in spite of the weakness of the pound against the euro, as hoteliers in Europe lower room rates to entice UK holidaymakers.

There has been an increase of 18 per cent in bookings to Greece so far in May, as compared with the same period last year, according to online travel agent, On the Beach.

Of Greek island destinations, Crete and Zakynthos are the most popular. Bookings are also up to the Spanish islands and to the Spanish mainland, with Majorca ranking as the top destination.

Thomas Cook has also said that it is seeing increased summer bookings to Greece by UK holidaymakers.

“Hoteliers in Greece have recognised the need to slash room prices in order to attract British holidaymakers,” said On the Beach Holidays chief executive, Simon Cooper. “Offering discounts of up to 30 per cent, they are now reaping the rewards.”

Although Greece is a perennial favourite among Britons, it is attracting greater numbers of visitors this year due to the box office hit “Mama Mia!”, which was filmed on Skopelos.
