The UK has launched a campaign to recruit over 1,000 cyclists which will mostly target young or new mothers returning back to work after maternity leave. The campaign, spearheaded by Olympic cycling champ Denis Lewis, seeks to find and train 1,000 cycling instructors.
The overall goal of the campaign is to get the newly found instructors to help train more than 500,000 children in safe bicycling practices before the close of 2012. Ms. Lewis, mother to her own three children, has said publicly that knowing how to ride a bike is a key life skill.

She added that it is vital for the public to help train children in safe and independent cycling skills. The gold medalist said that her own children love to cycle and it gives them an opportunity to get fresh air, be more independent, but it is important to provide them with proper training from the first day on a bicycle and forward.

The program will be offering up to £300 for training sessions for the cycling instructors, and up to £20,000 is available in potential earnings for those who take on the job. The program is being run by Cycling England in their Bikeability subgroup.

Paul Robison, Cycling England’s Bikeability manager has said that instructors will be at the frontline for the UK campaign and will be encouraged to train over 500,000 children in Bikeability safety and skills by 2012.
