Two women were arrested at John Lennon Airport in Liverpool when they tried to smuggle their dead relative on board an easyJet flight. The budget airline got more than it bargained for when Gitta and Anke Jarant, attempted to board their plane with Kurt ‘Willi’ Jarant, 91, who was already deceased.

According to the mother-daughter duo, Mr Jarant was alive when they arrived at the airport for their flight to Berlin on board an easyJet aircraft. Check-in staff questioned the pair, however, when they noticed that Mr Jarant, in a wheelchair and wearing sunglasses, was slumped over and unresponsive.

When questioned, however, both women said that he was an Alzheimer’s sufferer and was prone to sleeping that way. Authorities arrived on the scene and arrested both women on charges of failing to provide notice of death.

Mr Jarant, known by many as Willi, was a former airline pilot and according to his wife, had wanted to die in his home country of Germany. His daughter, Anke was his full-time caregiver.

After staff notified police, a doctor was sent to examine Mr Jarant. According to the doctor, Mr Jarant most likely passed away sometime the day prior to the family’s arrival at John Lennon Airport.

At present, both Mr Jarant’s wife and daughter have been released out on bail, however, further court proceedings have been scheduled for 1 June. Authorities believe that the two women were attempting to avoid having to pay the repatriation fee by bringing Mr Jarant on board the aircraft with them.
