Two Gatwick detention centre protesters arrested

In 2008, the Brook House detention centre, with a capacity of 420 prisoners is set to open next to Gatwick airport. The criminals who will be detained there will be immigrants, illegal obviously, and the centre will be their home until offenders can presumably be deported or removed form the UK.

A protest in West Sussex yesterday saw two of the protesters that marched down the A23 motorway between Crawley and Gatwick arrested for refusing to give their names and addresses to police when asked for them. This is a criminal offence according to police who detained the two protesters for their perceived anti-social behaviour.

The 300 strong crowd marched from Crawley’s city centre distributing pamphlets of information about what they feel is an inhumane practice, calling for the abolition of borders that create this suffering. Their banners waved and their boots stomped, but there is no way to say whether or not their protest march will accomplish anything in stopping the detention centre from opening. In all probability, with the gift of hindsight being what it is: it won’t.
