Two young women visiting Thailand — a tourist from Norway and another from the US — both died shortly after falling ill on the same day at a guesthouse on the popular tourist island of Phi Phi.
On Thursday, Thai police said that the cause of death was not known, although speculation ranged from alcohol or food poising to toxic fumes.
Both of the women were staying on the island, which is a popular budget traveller destination in southern Thailand.
The Norwegian woman was identified by the Andaman Times as 22-year-old Julie Michelle Bergheim. She died on Monday. Jill St Onge, a 27-year-old artist and bartender from Seattle, in the US, died on Sunday. She was identified by her parents.
Although the women were not known to have been in contact with each other, they both stayed at the Laleena guesthouse and reportedly suffered stomach pains and severe vomiting.
A 19-year-old Norwegian woman who was staying with Bergheim experienced similar symptoms, but was recovering in a hospital intensive care unit.
According to local doctors, the women died at a Phi Phi hospital, “due to dehydration and shock,” the Associated Press reported Police Capt. Pantanan Santhong as saying.
“Right now, we do not have any further information on what happened and how it happened,” the police captain said. “We are investigating.”
