Two bombs explode near Malaga resort
Posted on: August 18th, 2008 by Dave SmithTwo resort beaches on Spain’s Costa del Sol were the target of two small devices that detonated today near the popular resort of Malaga, as police closed a key area road to traffic while seeking a third device.
Local police reported that no one was injured during the incidents.
Sun-worshipping tourists were cleared off a packed Malaga beach before the first device exploded and later, thousands of others were moved by police from a marina in nearby Benalmadena before the second explosion.
“Two devices exploded, in Benalmadena and on Guadalmar beach in the (provincial) capital. They were of little power and did not cause injuries or physical damage,” reported a spokeswoman for the local Malaga government.
At the same time, the country’s main coastal motorway through the Costa del Sol was closed by police while they were looking for a third bomb in the area between Torremolinos and Malaga, according to a spokesman for the interior ministry.
The incidents brought traffic to a standstill and caused chaos on as weekend that is traditionally one of the busiest of the year on Spain’s roads.
Last month four small devices exploded at seaside resorts in the country’s north, which ETA claimed responsibility for – marking the beginning of its summer bombing campaign designed to inflict damage on Spain’s important tourism industry.
