Posted on: February 20th, 2008 by Neill ZerkThe Caribbean will soon have its first totally ‘green’ island. The island of Salt Cay represents 2.5 miles of coastline from where the Turks and Caicos economy was based on salt production from the 17th century until the 1960s. Premier Michael Misick announced the construction project at a recent news conference, saying “Any new development will be consistent with that philosophy (of sustainable development).”
The press conference was held to promote the upcoming 10th Annual Caribbean Conference on Sustainable Tourism which will take place from April 28th to May 1st.
Premier Misick continued, “It is hoped that by doing this conference, we are seen as leading the way in sustainable tourism development, but also it would help to educate some of the various people in the tourism industry and the people of the TCI of the need to preserve the environment, the need to have a clean surroundings.”
The conference will be held at a certified Green Globe Hotel, The Beaches Turks and Caicos Resort and Spa.
