US real estate mogul Donald Trump has received approval from the Scottish government to build “the world’s greatest golf course,” in his words, along the Scottish coast, despite the objections of environmentalist and local officials.

Last year, the 1 billion pound development project was rejected by Aberdeenshire authorities, because a part of its golf course encroaches on a rare bird habitat.

Despite the local council’s rejection of the plan, the national government agreed to review Trump’s application.

On Monday, Scotland’s Finance Secretary, John Swinney, issued the government’s final decision, stressing that the Trump resort would be of “great economic and social benefit” to the whole country.

Trump’s mother was born in Scotland, and he released a statement in which he said that the golf resort would be a “tremendous asset and source of pride for both Aberdeenshire and Scotland.”

“As I have often said, because of the quality of the land we are given to work with, we will build the greatest golf course in the world,” Trump added.

The resort will feature a 450-room hotel, 500 luxury homes and two championship golf courses.

The rejection of the plan by the Aberdeenshire Council late last year came after conservationists and local residents said that the course should not be built on the shifting sand dunes that are the habitat of some of the rarest wildlife in Scotland.
