Online travel agency TravelRepublic has reported an increase in overall sales of more than one-third for May of this year, as compared to the same month in 2007, showing that the market remains buoyant.

The online travel firm showed a growth in sales of 38% over May of 2007 - and the growth trend is strengthening. From June 1 to June 18 sales have risen 44% over the previous year.

TravelRepublic managing director, Paul Furner, noted that sales continue to be driven by companies that operate outside the Euro-zone. Sales to Tunisia, for example, increased by 157% in May, while sales to both Egypt and Turkey were up 139% during the same month. US sales rose by 81% in May 2008 as compared to the previous year.

Furner added: “A recent report by the Confederation of British Industry confirmed that the British public are still keen to book holidays despite the credit crunch and ongoing financial worries.

“Travel was the only consumer services sector to report growth in the first three months of 2008 which illustrates just how important our annual break is – particularly in such a tough economic climate.”
