Road Junky has just announced the short list of those who entered the 2007 Travel Writing Contest. This year’s contest aimed to revive the ‘spirit of gonzo journalism.’

The theme was ‘Travel Through Fear.’ Writers were asked to contribute pieces which illustrate travelers “who defeat the prejudices, disarm the risks and walk out into the unknown” despite the climate of fear and hysteria the media is often contributing to.

Stories were supposed to identify people’s worst fears and how they dealt with them. The contest closed at the end of June. Twelve short listed entries have been identified and are available to read online. The winners will be announced on August 1st.

The first place winner will get $100 and a copy of the Roadjunky Survival Handbook. The company is also giving $50 and a copy of Hand to Mouth to India to the second place writer and $30 plus Hand to Mouth to India to the writer who places third.

Roadjunky will publish winning entries in print and on their website (www.roadjunky.com)
