Only one person was injured when a fire broke out at in a control tower at the Miami International Airport on Wednesday.

A spokesperson for theMiami-Dade Fire-Rescue team who responded to the fire, Lavern Guilen explained that the fire was caused by the ignition of hot roofing tar which spilled out from its container. She reported that one worker on the site was injured by the fire and treated in hospital for minor burns.

Despite the lack of injuries, the fire will set the airport back as it mainly affected a rather costly project under construction. Fortunately, the fire did not sread from the tower’s upper deck.

The deputy aviation director at the airport, Max Fajardo, explained that caution was required by those responding to the fire due to the danger posed by the propane tank which was heating the tar.

The tower was a project of American Airlines who has not yet commented on the extent of the damage to the tower. The airline had hoped it would be in use by October, according to company spokesman Tim Smith.

“I’m sure it will set back the timing of that,” Smith said.
