Tourist’s skeleton found in the Australian desert
Posted on: August 22nd, 2007 by Paul FenrichThe skeleton of a tourist from Slovenia was found next to a bicycle in the middle of the Australian desert, in Queensland.
The bicycle and the remains of a body were spotted by helicopter. The pilot was flying over the Diamantina Developmental Road, just 65 kilometers west of Windorah when he saw the equipment on Monday.
Police from Windorah came out to investigate and found the skeleton lying 200 meters from the road, dressed in a tracksuit. The bicycle and backpack were discovered nearby.
The police estimate that the body had been in the location for as long as a year and report that foul play seems unlikely.
Police found paperwork in the backpack suggesting that the man was a 47-year old Slovenian who came to Brisbane in May 2006. Receipts in the bag show he purchased the bicycle on June 9th, 2006. The man was seen shortly afterwards in Quilpie on June 13th, 2006 and has not been seen since.
Australian police have contacted Interpol and officials in Slovenia in order to more formally identify the man and contact members of his family.
