Three hour delay at Aberdeen
Posted on: May 25th, 2008 by Neill ZerkAt Aberdeen Airport last night, passengers had to wait over three hours because of a security situation. The pilot of a bmi flight was concerned about a suspicious bag on the aircraft. Passengers had to deplane and identify their bags before the flight could take off. The 19:30 bmi flight from Aberdeen to Birmingham did not take off until 22:30, as a result.
Before the bag problem, the flight was already running late. The Aberdeen Airport’s check-in system had failed earlier, requiring all passengers to manually check in. As a result, most passengers boarded the aircraft 20 minutes later.
Unfortunately, the manual check-in also resulted in some confusion over the number of passengers on board and the number of bags which were supposed to be on board.
Because of the confusion, the pilot refused to go ahead with take-off until he was certain that the flight contained the correct number of passengers and the correct number of bags.
The luggage was unloaded, checked and reloaded and the plane took off at 22:30.
A spokesperson for bmi said: “There was a failure with the check-in system. This led to a baggage and head-count discrepancy. For security reasons there had to be a manual check.”
