Britain’s largest tour company has started a holiday price war by offering vacations from just £2 a night.

Holiday bargain hunters can find self-catering options in both Turkey and Greece for a low £14 a week.

The special deals are offered for the month of October only, by Thomson Holidays.

For a bit more the ever-popular and family-friendly island of Menorca is available to holidaymakers for £4 a night - or £28 for the week.

The deals do not include the cost of flights, but do cover the cost of studio or one-bedroom apartment units.

All of the properties feature luxury swimming pools shared communally and are situated near beaches. All the accommodations are rated as either two- or three-stars.

Other tour operators aren’t far behind, and are gearing up to match the Thomson offers for autumn getaways.

A spokesman for Thomson Holidays has denied that these deals are linked to the current credit crunch and larger numbers of Brits opting to holiday nearer to home this year.

He said: “Like all businesses, we occasionally run targeted marketing initiatives to promote small pockets of availability.”

“This is in no way a reflection of the current economic conditions. In fact, as noted in our most recent results released in May 2008, we have not seen any evidence of deteriorating customer sentiment in booking patterns.”
