Thomas Cook to extend global reach
Posted on: March 7th, 2008 by Dave BessThomas Cook is one of the most recognizable names in the travel industry. From its beginnings in Germany, the company is now all but ubiquitous in the western world, but now it wants more, and has just announced its plans for strategic acquisitions that would give the company a foothold in some of the world’s most promising emerging markets.
With a focus on Russia, India and China, Thomas Cook chief executive many Fontenla-Nuova said to a German newspaper that, “We want to grow in emerging markets because we still have a very weak presence there. The developing business and tourism markets suggest that growth potential is available within the various regions, while the growth in airline traffic and hotel development, especially in the Asia Pacific region indicates that infrastructure is improving to meet the demands of Westerners.”
The company has the cash to do it as well, with earning on existing European destinations proving successful as the company looks to hit the 460 million euro mark for 2009/10 fiscal profits.

Thomas Cook got me a cheap Cathay Pacific Flight-only deal last year when one of their staff ‘phoned a contact’ they knew.
Good deal it was as well, a lot better than what the Flight Centre could get me.

I never just book it, I always “Thomas cook it” as they say. I bet they open all over Russia next.
