A 15-year-old boy in New Zealand has pleaded guilty to murdering Karen Aim, from Orkney, when she was visiting the popular tourist destination last year.

Jah che Te Manawa Kaha Broughton, who is also called Shane, appeared in a Rotorua, New Zealand, court briefly earlier this week and will return for sentencing on 6 March.

Aim, 26 years old, died after going out on a January evening in 2008, in Taupo, a resort popular with tourists.

She was found unconscious and was taken to a local hospital where she later died from head injuries she sustained in the attack.

Her parents, Brian and Peggy Aim, travelled to New Zealand and were in the court when her attacker entered his plea. They said that they had expected to sit through a lengthy trial.

Aim’s father indicated that his reason for attending the trial was to learn what exactly had happened to his daughter before she died.

Police reported finding the woman near a school whose windows had been smashed. Security cameras captured a person riding on a distinctive-looking bicycle on the grounds of the school at the time of her attack.

Officials also reported that the victim’s camera and handbag were recovered from the boy’s home.
