On Friday night, Glasgow Airport had to be partially evacuated because of the discovery of a package deemed to be ‘suspicious’. The eastern area of the airport, as well as the domestic pier section on the main terminal building were affected by the security scare. The package was discovered at 23:00.

An airport spokesperson said that the Strathdyle Police had been called to investigate the matter and to carry out a search of the area. The police were accompanied by a police search advisor and a bomb disposal team. The procedure was a routine one developed and practiced when suspicious packages are located.

While the search took place flights continued to arrive and depart according to schedule and were not significantly disrupted.

Glasgow Airport is owned and operated by the British Airports Authority Scotland (BAA). Donald Morrison, head of media affairs with BAA Scotland, said: “There has been a partial evacuation of the main terminal building following the discovery of an unattended package Only a handful of passengers were at the airport at the time.”

The discovery of the suspicious package occurred almost a full year after the airport was attacked by a car, causing an explosion in front of the terminal.
