Survivors found in Brazilian plane crash
Posted on: February 9th, 2009 by Doug SmithOn Saturday, rescue teams in Brazil located four survivors of a plane crash in the Manacapuru River.
The aircraft, a Brazilian-made Bandeirante, crashed at approximately 1:50pm local time in the Amazon state of Manacapuru, according to operator Manaus Aerotaxi.
“The circumstances and causes of the accident are still not known and are being investigated by authorities,” the operator said in a statement it released.
Authorities noted that the aircraft took off from Coari, which is located approximately 225 miles south-west of Manaus, and later crashed into the Manacapuru River, which is a tributary of the Amazon.
According to local media reports, there were at least 20 people on board the plane, but verification of that number was not immediately possible. Manaus Aerotaxi, in its statement, made no mention of the number on board.
The daily newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo, reported that official records indicated that 24 people were on board, including 18 adult passengers, four infants and two crew members. Six bodies had been located by the time of the report.
One of the survivors was a 9-year-old child, the newspaper report added.
Daniel Guedes, a Civil Defense Coordinator, told a reporter from O Coariense, a local Coari newspaper, that the Manaus Aerotaxi plane was attempting an emergency landing on a make-shift landing strip when it crashed into the river.
