Summer ski trips on 3 continents
Posted on: July 9th, 2007 by Andrew MayerFor the northern hemisphere, summer runs from June to September, so most of us don’t really contemplate skiing during this time. But even in the northern hemisphere, in the province of British Columbia, Canada, the Blackcomb Glacier in Whistler is high enough that summer skiing is possible.
Two other great destinations for summer skiing are New Zealand and Argentina, more obvious since they are in the southern hemisphere and experience seasons inversely to the northern hemisphere. So depending where you are, you may be able to get away for a ski trip this summer after all.
Whistler’s Blackcomb Glacier is open for summer skiing while Whistler Mountain is not. Whistler Resort is one of the best places in the world for skiing and snowboarding in winter, but its summer facilities are smaller. There are three slopes well suited for beginners and many rural and expert trails can be found in the Treble Cone area.
The biggest ski resort in Argentina is Las Lenas, and this resort lies at 11,250 feet above sea level. It’s got over 40 miles of trails to swoop through and specializes in full day trips where guides take guests out to ski on virgin snow and unmarked trails.
New Zealand also takes advantage of its mountain ranges for skiing. Eric McFerran, founder of New Zealand Travel, a luxury travel company based in the US says about the Kiwi ski experience, “Skiing is a huge sport in New Zealand. It’s a unique place for skiers to visit because the weather is very temperate compared with the States, which has very cold temperatures in ski spots. In New Zealand, there is snow on the peaks but not always on the ground.”

Whistler’s summer ski facilities may be smaller but the party scene in that town has it going on all year round!

The ski hill in Argentina sounds pretty amazing. I wonder how much it costs to go out on a day trip there.. unmarked trails, virgin powder… mmmmm!
