Storm causes more delays in New York

A major storm which swept through New York early Wednesday morning brought enough rain to flood subways and rail lines and cause a series of delays at New York’s three major airports. Long distance travelers and commuters into the city alike were stranded by the storm for hours.

What started as a thunderstorm eventually prompted tornado warnings and a warning for a flash flood but by the end of the day the sun was out and shining and the temperature was high. Despite the humid temperature, trees lay toppled in the streets, the power remained out in some areas and businesses were left bereft of their employees and forced to close.

An investigator from the National Weather Service is trying to determine if the storm was in fact a small tornado.

Railways and subway lines were either delayed, diverted or shut down. Nothing ran on time. “We have been advising customers to avoid the system if possible because there is extensive flooding on the tracks,” NYC Transit spokeswoman Marisa Baldel said.

At John F. Kennedy International Airport, most planes were delayed up to an hour and a half and delays ran for about an hour at La Guardia.
