Sticky situation at East Midlands Airport
Posted on: June 20th, 2007 by Jennifer JonesClimate action group, ‘Plane Stupid’ staged a protest on Saturday at the entrance to the East Midlands Airport. As part of the group’s publicity campaign, two men superglued themselves to the airport entrance area in order to grab passenger’s attention while others handed out pamphlets about alternative means of transportation.
Inside the terminal, the activist released a banner tied to helium balloons while then floated in the departure lounge. The banner read: “Let’s Fry”.
Aviation pressure group, ‘Airport Watch’ designated Saturday as a day of action across Europe. The campaign is designed to help educate the public about the environmental impact of aviation, particularly of short-haul flights.
Similar protests were staged by Airport Watch at Heathrow Airport, Gatwick, Edinburgh, Paris, Brussels, Southampton, Bristol and Amsterdam.
The superglued activists were not the first protest launched by Plane Stupid at East Midlands Airport. Last year over twenty protesters barricaded a taxiway.
