The Heathrow Express, the train between Heathrow Airport and downtown London, recently announced that it will be providing broadband internet access on the 15 minute trip.

One of the major challenges in providing the service was dealing with the 6km stretch of rail which passes through a tunnel. Mobile operator T-Mobile and wireless mobile provider Nomad Digital assisted on the project and helped the train service provide constant connection for the duration of the journey.

The partnership with T-Mobile doesn’t end there. Passes for the broadband access on board the Heathrow Express will be on sale on the train itself but will also allow access to T-Mobile service in places where the connection is available. Currently T-Mobile has connections in a variety of cafés, bookstores and hotels in London.

The train’s internet service is expected to be popular with business people on long flights looking to catch up immediately once they’ve landed, or cram in a few extra emails before they’re airborne.
