Stansted Airport will station additional police officers on the airport premises in the months to come. The airport said 18 police officers and one inspector will begin working at the airport. With the new staff, there will be 109 police officers stationed at Stansted.

The additional police officers are the result of a cost-sharing agreement between Essex Police and the airport officials, who have agreed to shoulder the £7.5 million cost of the additional officers on staff.

The new officers will be working out of the Stansted police station and will be responsible with general policing duties at the airport.

Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lowton said: “The increase in officer numbers at Stansted Airport will ensure criminals are deterred from entering the area and offers further reassurance to people that Stansted is one of the safest airports to travel from.”

Matthew Gill, Stansted Airport Ltd’s finance director, added: “We are delighted that the negotiations between ourselves and Essex Police have concluded successfully. The new agreement ensures that we continue to provide a safe environment for passengers and staff.”

In the last 12 months, those police officers stationed at Stansted were successful reducing the number of offences at the airport by 11.8 per cent.

Chief Supt Ian Grüneberg said: “This is a great deal for anyone who visits or works at Stansted Airport. We already have the lowest levels of crime for any major airport in the UK.”
