Lately there has been a significant decline in the number of complaints about noise by residents in the area around Stansted Airport.

At the eighth annual noise seminar held by the airport at the Duxford Imperial War Museum this week, London Stansted was credited as having continued to improve its environmental record.

In addition to closely monitoring its flight-path noise pollution levels, the operator was also credited with having succeeded in restricting take-off and landing slots to the most clean and efficient aircraft.

In his remarks at the seminar, Dr Mark Watson, from the Society of British Aerospace Companies, noted that aircraft noise emissions around the UK have fallen by 75 per cent as compared with 30 years ago.

Stansted spokesman, Nick Barton, said that the reduction was particularly noticeable in the London area, and credited low-cost carriers and their energy-efficient aircraft with this improvement.

Barton went on to say that Stansted continues to work on keeping noisier aircraft from using the airport, and that they have imposed and enforce strict noise limits.

MEP Richard Howitt, who is the Labour member for Herts and Essex, commented on the noise pollution topic as well, calling for a complete ban on inefficient aircraft from all airports in Europe.
