St Kitts announces small hotels initiative

The government of St Kitts has announced that it is relaxing import duties paid by small hotels in an effort to help operators improve quality and keep costs under control.

The move is expected to be copied by other island nations in the Caribbean, making it possible for smaller operators to purchase essential products at prices that are more affordable. It is anticipated that the ability to save on product costs will enable small hoteliers to improve quality standards as well.

“Part of the scheme is that hotels have to comply with certain regulations as we seek to improve the quality and sustainability of bed stock,” noted St Kitts Tourism Minister Richard Skerritt.

He added: “We are not interested in helping poor service and poor standard hotels survive. We need to improve if we are to establish a high value tourism product that can be sustained in the future.”

Skerritt made his comments at a Caribbean marketplace event held in Rodney Bay, St Lucia, where he told the media that he was pleased that his country had been able to persuade the English cricket team to bypass Barbados and fly directly to St Kitts to hold its warm-up game.

“The recent change in captaincy has led to increased media focus on the team and we are anticipating even greater coverage than we had hoped for,” he added.
