Emirates and Cathay Pacific have both suspended their flights into Sri Lanka following increasing attacks by the Tamil Tiger rebels in the capital city of Colombo. The flights will remain suspended until further notice. Singapore Airlines and Sri Lankan Airlines are retaining their services but will only operate flights during the day.

The most recent attacks by the rebels include the bombing of two fuel facilities and a gas storage house by air on April 29th. In another incident, twelve were left dead after Tamil Tiger rebels engaged with members of the Sri Lankan armed forces.

“Safety is a top priority at Cathay Pacific and a careful assessment of the situation will be made before services are resumed,” said a spokesperson for the airline.

The Sri Lanka Tourist Board reminded foreigners that the rebels have never targeted tourists. However, in November 2006, Tiger forces made their first attack in the south of the island. Although the fighting was confined to military targets, the attack occurred not far from where many tourists were making their holiday vacations.

CEO of Sri Lankan Airlines, Peter Hill made the announcement on behalf of his airline on May 4th. “We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused to our customers as a result of our decision not to operate into and out of Colombo International Airport between 9pm and 5 am, however the safety of our passengers, crew and aircraft is our prime concern and one that we will not compromise on under any circumstances,” he said.
