South Wales Severn Tunnel Junction Set to Finish by New Year
Posted on: November 17th, 2009 by Andrew MayerThe Severn Tunnel Junction will be almost completed with new renovations which will improve the junction for its thousands of passengers. The renovations have been the largest rail investment scheme in South Wales, and are anticipated to be completed by the New Year.
The major remodel will see the reopening of Platform 4, which had been shut down and abandoned back in the 1980s. The Platform will now accommodate passengers embarking on various rail journeys throughout the continent. The entire railway will now be much more efficient as, on top of reopening Platform 4, new layout, new tracks, and more modern technology and equipment.
In total 3.5 miles of new track have been laid down, and the tracks have been redesigned for better efficiency. Signaling equipment between the Severn Tunnel and East Usk junctions have also be updated and modernized for better safety and more accurate timetables.
The remodel has also opened up 11 new job positions at the rail line, and established a new for six more signal workers on the tracks. In addition to the new signal posts and railway tracks, a new siding facility has also been added at Severn Junction station. Passengers will benefit immensely from the move, including new passenger waiting shelters, and a new digital timetable board which will keep track of trains in real time.
Construction, which began a year ago, is expected to last an additional two months, with the heaviest construction delays taking place during the more quiet Christmas time period. Some of the rail services will be replaced with coach services from December 27 to January 3 of next year. Passengers travelling in this time should check with National Rail Enquiries prior to travel for delays and time tables.
