Slovakia will host the new international travel and tourism European and Green Awards Ceremony for 2008 this autumn, on the fifteenth anniversary of the World Travel Awards.

The World Travel Awards ceremony is set to take place at one of the renowned environmentally-friendly places on earth, AquaCity, which is a luxurious resort located in Poprad, Slovakia.

The self-contained resort is almost exclusively self-powered, using geothermal water and solar energy. AquaCity is uniquely suitable as the site of the 16 October 2008 international event.

The founder and current president of World Travel Awards, Graham E. Cooke, indicated that AquaCity was this choice for this year’s highlight event for the travel and tourism industry due to the example it sets as a green venue.

“The resort saves around 27 tonnes of carbon from entering the atmosphere each day, compared with a traditional resort burning conventional fossil fuels,” Cooke noted.

Cooke compares the World Travel Awards to the ‘Oscars,’ and says that the awards have built a global reputation by helping instil quality in all aspects of the industry’s offerings to customers, and in business performance as well.

At the ceremony, the travel companies and organisations incorporating the most sustainable practices and also Europe’s top destinations, resorts and tourism brands will be honoured.

The overall awards categories also include Africa, Asia, Australasia, Central America, Europe, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, North America and South America.
