Singapore Airlines, the first carrier to offer service on the new Airbus A380 super jumbo jet, made its inaugural A380 flight to Beijing ahead of the 2008 Olympic Games today. The Olympics will open on 8 August.

In a statement that was issued by the airline on Saturday, it reported that it was beginning a full week of special A380 flights to the Chinese capital, as flight SQ802 departed from Singapore’s Changi Airport, carrying 385 passengers and 25 crew members. It was scheduled to arrive on Saturday afternoon at the Beijing International Airport.

On the flight were 12 athletes and 18 officials from Singapore’s Olympic team, noted an airline spokesperson, adding that over the next several days hundreds of athletes and officials from nearly a dozen countries would be flying to Beijing on the A380.

The daily service to Beijing leading up to the Olympics will continue on the world’s largest passenger jet until the opening of the Games on 8 August.

Singapore Airlines currently operates 66 flights each week to four cities in China. Included are 21 flights weekly to the Beijing International Airport, 35 flights to Shanghai, three flights to Nanjing and seven flights to Guangzhou.
