Shortly after Emirates Airline saw the delivery of its first A380 last week it made a show of unveiling its first-class cabin and a feature unique to this award-winning carrier.

The world’s first in-flight showers will be available to first class passengers on the Emirates’ A380 allowing them to freshen up before enjoying their favourite beverage at the cabin’s exclusive cocktail bar and then retiring to their private seating area where they will have at their disposal a fully-equipped work station and a mini-bar.

Passengers choosing to use the on-board shower facilities will need to be fairly quick about it, however, as a timer is set for five minutes, and a warning is given by the “traffic light” inside the shower cubicle just before the water is about to be cut off. “If you’re on amber and your hair’s full of shampoo, you want to get moving,” quipped the carrier’s president, Tim Clark. He added that flight attendants will clean the cubicles between each passenger’s use.

The A380s will require an addition 500kg of water for the two showers in the first class cabin, but Emirates plans to save on overall weight by reducing the number of magazines placed in seat-back pockets.

Emirates is the second carrier in the world to have taken delivery of an Airbus A380. It has ordered 58 of the super jumbos, which carry 489 passengers.
