Sapporo, Japan gets a bit closer to Cairns, Australia

Australians keen to hit the slopes on Hokkaido, the most northerly island in the chain that defines Japan this winter will have an easier time of it thanks to Continental Airlines. Sapporo, the capital city on Hokkaido is the gateway for some of the best skiing in Japan, and Continental’s new route will see a same day service to Sapporo from Cairns, Australia, stopping over on the United States controlled island of Guam, itself a popular vacation spot for the Japanese.
As of now, Continental already uses Guam to further their services to Tokyo, Japan, as well as Micronesian islands and Honolulu. The service from Guam to Sapporo will commence in November with four weekly connections. In the peak holiday season from December 27th to January 22nd these flights will be daily.
Lars Olafsson, general manager of sales for Continental Australia’s general sales agent, World Aviation Systems says, “Guam and the Micronesian islands offer some of the world’s best diving, on both reefs and World War 2 wrecks, while Sapporo is an increasingly popular destination for snow skiers.
“The flights from Cairns to Guam offer great opportunities for dive holidays, while the onward services to Sapporo offer the options of ski holidays or even sea-and-ski combinations.”

Diving then skiing, what a combination.
Wonder how much the extortionate rate is for a round trip? Cut out Guam and I bet you cut out half the cost.
Why not just take to the piste in NZ?

Always been curious about Guam. A US territory right? I heard it was like Club-Med but with barbed wire ruound it, or was that just a joke?

Sapporo has that famous beer that I first drank whilst skiing in 1996….but I wasn’t tempted to travel via Guam at all, I took an internal flight with JAL from Osaka.
If you’re going to combine diving and skiing on one trip, then that’s an awful lot of luggage to be carrying!

if i won’t go to guam then I will go to dive in maylasia or bali.
any god dive sites at guam?

Guam is only just reall opening up its decent dive sites and some of them are very beautiful indeed. We will be on our 4th trip there this fall and wcan’t wait to sample the delights of such a place.
Why do many give Guam a bad press?
The Lord knows, go there and find out.
